Periodontics Your Gums and Bone
Periodontia means "Around the teeth".
This means your gums and the bone that holds your teeth. This is the first thing that your dentist will check to see if it
is healthy.
Bleeding gums, odor, swelling, loose teeth, and pain are signs
of a periodontal problem.
Your dentist will test your gums
with a periodontal probe. This is a instrument that measures the distance from your gum to your bone. Why is this important?
This measurement shows how much bone is supporting your teeth.
Depending on these measurements, your dentist may refer you to a periodontist, a dentist who specializes in treatment
of gum disease. The periodontist may reccomend surgery to correct the problem.
Periodontitis is a disease that can be controlled, but the only person that can control it is you. Brushing, flossing,
using interdental brushes, regular dental visits, cessation of smoking, and education are your weapons in the fight against
gum disease.
If you are concerned about
the condition of your gums, see your dentist. Ask him about the condition of your periodontium. Let him show you the
difference between healthy gums and gingivitis. How does gingivitis differ from Periodontitis? Ask your dentist, or ask
me.
How are you gums? How is your bone? do you know?
